Description

Edit: I would like to say, if anyone has questions about what's happening/what happened in Berkeley, feel free to ask and I'll probably either know the answer or know where to find the answer.

November 9, 2011 UC Berkeley joined the Occupy movement and began protesting the fee hikes and and privatization of education in the US.

The students were 100% nonviolent and have been. The police, on the other hand, have been arresting protesters, beating them with batons, and dragging them by the hair through bushes.

As an in-state student, I am paying almost $30,000/year for my education (including the tuition, books, and room and board). I have a job and I'm a full time student. The out of state students pay closer to $50,000/year and the international students pay even more. Because the government is doing very, very badly economically, they have made the decision to cut the education budget, and thus the university is raising the cost by 81% over the next four years. Largely, our fees go to paying the grossly large salaries of the administration.

If anything needs to be protected, it is our education. We cannot stand by and let this happen. Occupy and make them realise that we will not let greed dominate our world, and that we will not standby and accept the decimation of our educational system.

I live in California and see these protests a lot. I'm only in high school but I'm fearing for my future. What if I can't pay for my college? What if I can't get into college because of how expensive it is? I wish the republicans could see what the Occupy Wall Street movement is trying to say and start thinking about the MIDDLE CLASS, not the rich and the companies that played a huge roll in monopolies. Why can't we think fair in this country's government instead of parties? :(
